PERFORM ON THE DAY
We caught up with United top scorer Joe Garner this afternoon, and he gave us some reaction to the 3-2 win over Port Vale.
"I suppose two 3-2's in a row is a bit strange really," he said. "Mind you, it was probably even stranger for Jeff because he's just told me he was playing for them last year! Then again, I suppose it doesn't really matter about how they come or in what shape, it's another three points and another job done at the end of the day."
"I have to say I actually thought we were the better team in the first half," he conceded. "We've given away a sloppy first goal and then they've caught us on the break for the second. All I remember is getting in a header at one end of the pitch and they've done the perfect counter by sticking it in at the other end a couple of seconds later. Port Vale did took their chances when they came along in the first half, so credit to them."
"I know that people are saying that we should have had a penalty before their second goal, but I couldn't actually tell you what part of the lad it hit," he said. "As I say, all I remember is getting in a header from a corner but I didn't really see it. I headed it and then sort of ended up twisting and facing the other way, and all I heard was a big shout, so if you're looking for a definite answer I'm afraid you'll have to ask someone else."
"What the match did show was that, just like Hartlepool, the lads have got the right attitude and the right team spirit, because that's twice in difficult circumstances we've managed to turn it round and get the win," he told us. "We have an honest team and I think everyone works hard for each other. We knew that if we got an early goal that it wasn't over and that we could get back in to it."
"As for myself I didn't think my overall play was too bad," he added. "Sometimes the goals come and sometimes they don't. They've been going in recently and Vale was just one of those ones where they didn't. It's not going to worry me too much though. I'll just keep working away and hope they come along more often than not."
"Fortunately we had a lot of good performances right though the team," he said. "I actually thought Danny Graham played really well. His hold up play was excellent and he worked very, very hard. He's had a rough run recently but I think he brings a lot to the side, even when he's not scoring, and that performance showed it. Then you've got Joycey who came on and made a big impact, and Hackers has scored another couple of brilliant goals. He's a very, very good player, quick, tricky and has a good delivery on him, but I think one of the things that goes unnoticed about Si is that he's a great finisher, and we're grateful for the two he got on Saturday."
"It's another tough away game next," he concluded. "Then again I think we're in one of those Leagues where they all seem to be tough. Anyone can beat anyone and it's all about making sure you perform on the day."
