A GOOD FESTIVE START
We caught up with defender Richard Keogh, following an excellent win over Leyton Orient, to get his view on the game.
He said: "It's a good win and it always makes it a bit better when it's against one of your nearest rivals. We knew it was going to be a massive game going in to it because they are up there for a reason, so we were looking forward to it. I think there was a good atmosphere around the ground and to come away with the three points is a magnificent result for us."
"It was a cagey sort of a first half," he told us, "because it was obviously a game that neither side wanted to lose. However, I thought we made the better chances and perhaps with a bit more quality in the final third we could have got ourselves a couple of goals up. Then we also knew that if we took that on in to the second half that we stood a good chance of winning the game, and I thought we did that and deserved the victory in the end."
"At half time the gaffer simply told us to keep the tempo up and keep working hard," he explained. "He asked us for that little bit of quality, and told us that our chances would come, and luckily for us that happened pretty quickly. They're giving him grief saying it was a shinner, or whatever, but to be fair to him that's why he's got ten goals this season. He's a big threat, and either way he's stuck it away nicely, and even though we could've had a couple more we're more than happy with the three points and where that puts us in the table."
"We're delighted with the way we defended today," he admitted, "because I think, if you speak to Westy, then he'll tell you that he didn't have a lot to do. That's down to everyone, and not just the back four. The whole team worked extremely hard and that's what you need. The lads in front of us started it, and I thought that the back four looked very solid too. We did well when we had to, because they have some very good players. The lad Boyd is excellent and he's scored a lot of goals, but we kept him very quiet, so we knew they were a threat and we're delighted with the way we dealt with it and with the three points. Hopefully that'll just stick a little bit more of a gap between us and some of the teams below us."
"It's a good start to the Christmas period," he concluded. "It stretches out the unbeaten run in the league too and it gives us something to build on over this period. Hopefully we can keep that going now and keep picking up the results we need, and that will put us in good stead for the rest of the season. Come January, if you're there or thereabouts you can kick on and have a go at winning promotion, and that's what we all want to do."
