DEFINITELY MY GOAL
Simon Hackney has shown in the past that he has more than the odd spectacular goal in his locker, and he came up with yet another in the 2-0 win over Gillingham.
Speaking after the game, he said: "It was a fantastic win. I thought it was a tough old game, but we ground it out and got a good three points, and I suppose that's what really matters."
"I think it was perhaps one of those games that you look back on come January or March, and you think - well, we didn't play great, but it was a good win - and they are the type of game that you can slip up in if you're not careful," he explained. "Obviously it's a home win as well, which I think is important, because we really want to make Brunton Park a bit of a fortress. We know that not many teams are going to want to come up here and play us. Maybe we haven't played our best today, but if we can keep doing what we've done, and keep picking up the results as well, then that will take us up the table. We've got a clean sheet, and that's a positive as well, so it's been a pleasing day."
"I thought both of our goals have come at really nice times for us, and just took the wind out of their sails a little," he told us. "Gillingham came at us and you certainly couldn't accuse them of coming here just to defend. They made it very hard for us at times, but I thought the lads went about the game very professionally. We had spells where we played some really good stuff, and others we made it a bit difficult for ourselves, and we had to stick in and defend well, but at the end of the day we've got the win and that's all important."
On his goal, he said: "Danny Graham and the rest of them are calling for two own-goals, but then they would wouldn't they. They're having me on, and having a bit of a joke at my expense, but I'm definitely claiming that one. It was still on target, and it only just nicked the lad, so it's definitely my goal. What do they say, 'If you don't shoot you don't score,' - they're not wrong!"
"It's my second goal in a couple of weeks as well," he added, "but this one was nice because we won at the end of it. I've mentioned it before, but I feel that after last year I think I'm getting fitter and stronger with every game. It's going really well at the minute, and not just for me but for the team. We've got a hard run now, but then anyone you play in this league is going to be difficult. I think it's Southend next and they've come down from the Championship and started off well, but if we stay positive, and keep trying to do the right things, then I don't see why we can't come away with a really good result."
