GETTING THE SHARPNESS BACK
Fresh from signing a two-year extension to his contract, we quizzed Simon Hackney about a number of issues today.
He said: "When you're out injured for a long time, like I was, I don't think you realise just how long it takes to actually get back in to gear. Obviously you have to overcome the injury, but then, after that, you've got to try and find your form and get back in the side. I think I'm just about getting back to where I'd like to be, and building that form, fitness and confidence back up. My game is all about taking someone on and beating them, and although I've just wanted to snap in to it straight away, I think it did take me a while to realise that it takes a little bit of time for that sharpness to come back. I still think there's little bits and pieces still to come, but I'm sure if I keep working hard and have a spell of playing games then I'll be as sharp as I was."
"It was good to get on against Tranmere on Saturday," he added, "and I thought I did OK, but then that's what I'm here to do. It goes without saying that I want to try and get back in to the starting line-up, but the only way I can do that is by taking my chances when they come along. That's what I'm intent on doing, and that's what I try to do in every game I play. I like to get at people, get past people and hopefully create something, and I thought hat happened a little bit against Tranmere, but unfortunately not enough to get a result."
"The fans are brilliant as well," he said. "They play a massive part in my career. I was out for a long time and they were still singing my name. Even last season, when I was out, I would be at games sometimes and they'd start singing, and I thought that was superb. The way they get behind me is a massive boost, and I think the rest of the lads would tell you that without them the team just isn't the same package."
"It's always hard to lose, whatever the circumstance," he told us. "They've dug in and got a goal, and if we're honest we switched off a little bit. We don't like it when that happens, but these things come along in football. You have to say that down the other end we didn't create too much, or cause them as many problems as we'd have liked either. We're all hurt by losing, but we've got a good bunch of lads and we've got our heads down and worked even harder to be ready for the next one, which is Swansea on Friday. It's in the past now so we'll move on, stay positive, go down there and fight for the right result."
On the late penalty shout, he explained: "I thought it was a definite penalty. I know he headed it, but he climbed all over me just to be able to get there. I also thought you weren't meant to tackle from behind, but I'm not a Referee and perhaps that's not the case. I don't know ,but in my eyes I thought it was a certainty."
Moving on to the Reserve game this afternoon. he concluded: "I thought we approached it very professionally. The young lads came in and played very well, which is great to see. We took our chances really well, which always gives you confidence, and we deserved the result."
