KEEPING IT CLEAN

Posted on: Tue 04 Sep 2007

Right back Paul Arnison has come back in to the side with a bang so far this season, and never more so than on Saturday when United's number 15 turned in a superb display after coming on as a second half substitute.

He told us after the game: "I think in the first half we looked a touched heavy-legged. We struggled to get going and they made it very difficult for us. When you look at it they had 11 men behind the ball and it was up to us to try and break them down, so it was a very tough first half. You've got to motivate yourself for these sorts of games. If they're sticking men behind the ball then we've got to take the game to them. You can't just sit back and expect a performance, and the fans expect us to go at teams at home as well. I think they wanted that, and we gave it to them in the second half. Danny (Livesey) has started excellently this season, and he had a good pre-season, and long may it continue for both him and us. It was another good goal as well."

"I was a little bit frustrated to be sat on the bench to say the least," he confirmed, "because I wanted to get on and help to get us the victory. You've always got to show the manager that you are willing to fight for your place and that you want to be in the team, and I'm no different to anyone else, because that goes for all of us. If the gaffer says 'You're going on' then you've got to get on and try and do a job for the team. Every little bit helps."

On the repertoire of tricks that have been a big part of his game over the last few weeks, he told us: "I've been playing with my little lad, Harry, in the back garden. He's only five but he's showed me a few tricks and we've been working on a few things. He does all these tricks to me and so I thought I'd give it a go ... nah, it's because I don't really know where to go, so I just pull off the odd trick. It was the same at Walsall where I had nowhere to go. I looked up, did a trick and then whipped the ball in to the box. If it works, we're all happy!"

With one goal of the season already under his belt, he found himself with another scoring opportunity on Saturday. He explained: "The ball came in and I shouted to Gally to let it go. I actually didn't think that he was going to leave it. Then, right at the last second, he let it come through and I tried to react as quickly as I could, but I just couldn't get any direction on it, and unfortunately for me it went wide."

Defensively, though, there can be few complaints.

"Clean sheets win you games," he said. "That's what we say in the dressing room and that's the mentality we have. Keep and clean sheet and hopefully, if we can nick the odd goal or two, then we've got a chance. But first and foremost it's vitally important that we keep the other team out, and I think that goes not just for the back four but for the whole team."
