PLENTY OF ENCOURAGEMENT

Posted on: Sun 24 Jun 2007

johann2On-loan 19-year-old Bolton striker Johann Smith has caused all sorts of problems for defenders in the last few games, and his arrival on the pitch on Saturday had an almost immediate impact as his trickery with the ball won the free kick that ultimately led to the goal.

We caught up with him after the game to get some reaction to his exploits.

He told us: "I really enjoyed myself when I came on. Every time I play I think it's fantastic anyway, but I am happy at the moment, because when I get the ball I'm doing the things that I am supposed to do."

"There has been so much encouragement for me," he added, "and that has been excellent. The players have been great, and especially the Assistant Manager Greg, he is always talking to me and telling me what it is he wants. The Manager is the same, he is always encouraging me, and he just wants me to get a player one on one and use my skill and pace to get past him. I have started to do that more regularly, I think."

"I got that free kick," he explained, "and I think that it was the last player before I would have been able to turn towards goal. Who knows what would have happened, I don't really mind, because it's more important that it works out for the team. We got the goal from it, so that will do."

"It was really hot out there today," he admitted. "My mouth was dry the whole time and I actually started to wonder if we hadn't travelled to a different country! This isn't England in April, it's way too hot. I think we dealt with it in the end, because we wanted to keep the wins coming."

"If we are going to be honest," he said, "I don't think we held the ball as well as we usually do in the first half. The Manager had a good talk with us at half time and we changed things a little, and it came good for us. I know when I get on the pitch that the only thing I can do is give it my best. Hopefully that will be enough to impress everyone and I will give the Boss plenty to think about. I'll do that whatever the situation. If I'm on the bench I will come on and give it everything, and if I start I will give it everything."

"We don't want to get carried away with any of this," he told us. "People are going to talk about the Play Offs, but we have to keep our heads. We know that if we keep playing like this and keep the work rate up, then we can get there. The gap is down to one point, and the team is looking really good. We have quality right throughout the team, so we definitely have a chance. It's another huge game next week, and we've been talking about it on the bus already. We know what it will mean if we pick up those 3 points, and I honestly think we will."

"For myself, I'll keep looking at this season for now," he concluded. "Wherever I play football, I just want to improve as a player, whether that is here with Carlisle or when I go back to Bolton. I enjoy playing, so I'll do my best for the team I play for and constantly look to improve."
