FIXTURE: United 10 - 3 Sunderland Coll

11 September 2013

Entertaining game on Tuesday afternoon

A young Carlisle United side hosted Sunderland College for an enjoyable fixture on Tuesday afternoon and a first half goal spree set the tone as the Cumbrians romped into a 6-2 lead.

Brandon Gwinnutt opened the scoring on the day and his neat strike was quickly followed a nice finish from Jason Blackburn. United made it 3-0 through Conor Hammell but things started to get interesting when the College pulled two goals back during a good spell of play.

Alex Salmon built a four-goal cushion for the home side with a hat-trick ahead of the break - one of which was a crisp finish from the penalty spot.

The second half followed the theme of the first with Brandon Gwinnutt breaking from deep to make it 7-2 before Sunderland bagged a penalty of their own to keep things interesting.

Rolling substitutions disrupted the flow as the game went on but there was still time for Tom White, Danny Hodgson and Patrick Brough to take the Blues into double figures.

"It was a really strong performance with some good play in and out of midfield," youth coach Chris Blake said. "It was good to see Brandon Gwinnutt back in action, and he was full of energy, and there were decent performances all over the pitch. It was a good run-out for everybody."

United - Eccles, Gwinnutt (Chisholm 70), Chisholm (Dixon 46), Moyes, Marshall, Wallace (White 46), Hammell, Lynch, Salmon (Elliott 46), Blackburn (Hodgson 46 (Blackburn 85)), Brough.

Goals - Salmon (3 - (1 pen)), Gwinnutt (2), Blackburn, Hammell, White, Hodgson, Brough.
