University of Cumbria and United join forces for special event

The city of Carlisle is invited to attend a FREE community fun day to provide everyone with a well-deserved afternoon of entertainment, reunion and relaxation and to celebrate the city’s flood recovery.

The University of Cumbria and Carlisle United have teamed up to provide friends, neighbours, staff, students, fans and supporters an afternoon of fun and entertainment.

The event is open to everyone and will be held on Sunday 10 July at Carlisle United’s Brunton Park between 12.30-4.30pm.

The university and club have arranged for a wide variety of exciting activities to entertain the whole family, old and young alike, so why not come along and challenge your dad to a ‘Gladiator Dual’ or mum on the ‘Rodeo Bull’ - it’s guaranteed to be a fun packed day!

For football fans there is also a fantastic opportunity to meet Carlisle United players and to challenge them to a penalty shoot-out and get involved in some mini training sessions.

The Army, Police and Fire Service will be attending the event and carrying out various interesting demonstrations.

Other activities include:

• Silverband Falconry
• Circus workshop
• Obstacle course
• Balloon workshop with Cheeky Charlie
• Kids ‘Disco Dome’
• Rodeo bull
• Bungee run
• Gladiator duel
• Face painting
• Sumo suits

Refreshments, a BBQ and bar will also be available throughout the day for everyone to enjoy.

University of Cumbria Event Manager Carol Milnes said: “We are absolutely delighted to be working with Carlisle United on this fantastic community event. The floods had a devastating effect on the local community as well as our own staff and students.

"Many neighbours in the area haven’t seen each other since December last year and the aim of this event is to really celebrate the city’s flood recovery and amazing resilience of this fantastic community.”

Carlisle United’s Finance Director Suzanne Kidd said: “The club and the community forged some very strong bonds in the wake of the floods, as was seen when our players and staff helped local residents with the initial clean up and clear out of their properties.

"In return we were overwhelmed when we asked for help at Brunton Park to see so many people turn up to give us their time and assistance. The Fun Day is a chance for everyone to come together in recognition of the real Cumbrian spirit we saw in the region at what was a very difficult time.

"There will be activities for people of all ages to enjoy and it has made us very proud to be able to work with the University of Cumbria on what we think will be an amazing event.”

There is still time for business and individuals to become involved with this exciting event, through sponsorship, donation or in-kind support.
