INTERVIEW: Nice to score a match winning goal

Tom Miller on his goal against Stevenage

Defender Tom Miller spoke to us after the Wednesday training session about his fourth goal of the season against Stevenage at the weekend.

"It's amazing to think that was my fourth goal because I didn't really know what to expect from this season," he admitted. "I said when I came that I wanted to bring goals to the team and that's what I've done so far, so it's gone well for me.

"It's always nice to score a match winning goal, especially when it's so close to the end of the game. The game didn't go too well for me, with the penalty in the first half, so it was pleasing on all sides."

Manager Keith Curle revealed at the weekend that Miller was one of the players who had received extra advice during the half time team talk as an improvement in performance was looked for across the board.

"I think I deserved the talking to that I got from the gaffer at half time," he told us. "I've set myself standards, and we've got standards as a team, and I wasn't anywhere near them.

"I knew I was going to get a bit of criticism at half time but it was down to us to react. We needed to come out for the second half and make sure things went right. I expected it, I deserved it and it helped me to get going in the second half."

On the first half penalty, he said: "The ball got thrown over my head and it was just a lazy tackle from myself really. I just wanted to disappear at that moment but Mark [Gillespie] did brilliantly again for us, as he has done lots of times this season.

"Credit to all of the lads because when certain individuals aren't at it we crack on, help each other out and make sure we stick together."

"I was pleased with most of the second half but I know there's more to come from me than what I showed on Saturday," he insisted. "Overall I was pleased with the second half and the goal made everything a lot easier for me that evening.

"The clean sheet means everything, to be honest, because I think we've deserved it and it's been coming. It's good for all of us. We've put in such a lot of work as a squad. It's pleasing for everyone and hopefully it will push us on and there'll be many more to come."

On the build up to the goal, he said: "I went to make a run in front of my marker and ended up slipping over! My hand was on the floor and he stood on it, which really hurt. I was in a lot of pain but I didn't really notice until I started celebrating. I thought I'd broken my hand but it's fine, even though it is a bit swollen.

"I was in that much pain I nearly stopped, but I then saw the ball coming over. My marker had stopped running as well. I think he did it on purpose, so I just stepped in front of him and managed to score the goal. I don't know what it is but I always seem to find a bit of space in the box. It's something I've always done it and it's nice when you score from it."

"We had a good week with that and the result at Orient," he agreed. "The lads have been brilliant and we've stuck together. We've got a great squad and six points away from home is brilliant. It's positive looking at the league table because it's quite tight at the top, but you never know what could happen.

"It's nice to score goals and do well in a team that's doing well. It's not just me, credit has to go to everyone because it's easy to play in a team with players who always want the ball.

"We've got a philosophy of how we want to play which suits how I play, so everything is coming together to help me play well."
