Striker Steven Rigg on the Wimbledon game and his goal
Centre forward Steven Rigg gave us his reaction to his goal and the victory at Wimbledon at the weekend.
“It was a massive result for us on Saturday, and particularly with Tranmere winning as well,” he said. “The points mean we’ve dragged a few more teams into the mix and that can only be good.
“It was a game where everyone worked hard and you could see how much it meant when the final whistle went. Dave Amoo scored the winner just before that and it was a huge relief for all of us.”
On his goal, he said: “It’s pretty good to get it in front of the fans. I ran towards the crowd but I wasn’t sure where our fans started and where they finished. I knew some of my friends were further up the pitch, but I didn’t know anyone who was in front of me.
“Having said that, it’s more about the result than who scores. We all want points on the board and to be climbing up the table.”
“It was a good cross from Matt [Young],” he agreed. “I used to score quite a few headers and it’s just a case of going to attack it by getting in front of your man. Hopefully it goes in once you’ve done that.
“I’ve no idea how I keep getting in these positions. I just seem to be there. The ball seems to drop right, or I’m in a good place, and hopefully I’ll keep doing that and getting on the end of things.”
And on his celebration with the fans, reminiscent of the scenes when he bagged his first for the club at Hartlepool, he said: “The fans have been great with me. As long as they’re happy with how I’m performing, and the manager is as well, then I’ll be pleased with it all. I didn’t really know what I was doing, if I’m being honest.
“I do feel part of everything now because the nerves I had when I first came here have settled down. There’s still more to come as far as I’m concerned and I definitely want more goals. I haven’t set a target, or anything like that, because I just want as many as I can get.”
Looking back at the way the game started, he said: “The early goal wasn’t what we were expecting, to say the least. We’d prepared well and we felt comfortable going into the game.
“It’s not ideal when that happens, because it gives you a mountain to climb, but you just have to get on with it. The way we responded was massive. We were on top for the 20 minutes or so after their goal.
“We got about them, turned them round and got into good areas. It was a decent reaction from us and Sean [O’Hanlon] got his goal at a good time. It meant were back in the game with plenty of time to go and it showed a bit of our character.”
“The role I was given was different, but I enjoyed it,” he confirmed. “It helps that I scored and we won, but the job I was doing was a lot different to what I’ve been used to. I felt like I settled into it and I’m happy to play anywhere if we’re picking up results.
“It’s another tough game for us at Bury at the weekend. We’ll go there looking to do what we did at Wimbledon and hopefully we’ll come away with the same result.”
