SRTRC: Event day at Brunton Park

20 November 2014

Show Racism the Red Card event day at Brunton Park

On Thursday 20 November Carlisle United will be joining Show Racism the Red Card (SRtRC) at Brunton Park to teach young people about the dangers of racism.

The event with Carlisle United FC has been organised in partnership with CUFC in the Community and Cumbria Police. The day will run from 09:30 to 14:30.

Pupils from St Bede’s, Castle Carrock and Brook Street Primary Schools will take part in a range of anti-racism activities, a hate crime workshop from Cumbria Police and a fun football session from Carlisle United Football in the Community coaches.

In the afternoon the young people will see a screening of the SRtRC film and then they will then have the chance to pose questions to a panel including CUFC players.

Following the event, SRtRC are asking the young people to create a newspaper style report of the event.

Chief Executive of Show Racism the Red Card, Ged Grebby, said: “The educational events with football clubs are one of the highlights of our work, it’s brilliant to be able to continue this season’s programme of events with Carlisle. The club are long-standing supporters of the campaign".

The educational events at football clubs allow young people to experience a firsthand interaction with anti-racism role models in the form of professional footballers and spend time thinking critically about this important issue.

During the 2013-14 season the campaign held 38 events in England, attended by 79 professional footballers and managers and educating 3,230 young people.

Julie Dodd, Force Diversity Officer at Cumbria Constabulary said “Cumbria Constabulary recognise the important work carried out by Show Racism the Red Card and we are delighted, once again, to be working in partnership with both SRtRC and Carlisle United to raise awareness of hate crime and the devastating impact it can have.”
