RESERVES: Gillies grabs late goal

3 October 2013

Behind-closed-doors at Blackburn

A young Carlisle United side travelled to face a strong Blackburn Rovers XI, which included former-Blue Ben Marshall, in a behind-closed-doors friendly on Wednesday afternoon and Josh Gillies grabbed a late consolation for the Cumbrians as Rovers ran out as comfortable winners with a 6-1 victory.

Former-Benfica and Portugal U21 striker Rui Ferreira played for the visitors having started a trial period at Brunton Park on Tuesday morning.

Ferreira, who had a trial spell with Partick Thistle last month, is set to stay with United this week to allow manager Graham Kavanagh more time to come to a decision.

"We had a lot of young lads playing against a team with a fair bit of experience, so it was always going to be a difficult game," Kavanagh said. "It showed us that we have a group just behind the first team who need to work hard and who need to step up.

"I'd like to thank Blackburn for looking after us again. We've been down there a few times and it's always very worthwhile. These games are important for us and they treat it properly, which is something we really appreciate."

And on trialist Rui Ferreira, he said: “He showed a few glimpses of what he’s got so we’d like to see more of him. It was a difficult game to make any judgement from so we'll keep him for a for a few more days and we'll see how he goes from here.”

United – Fleming, Gwinnutt (Salmon), Chisholm, Dickson (Wallace), Brough, Todd, Potts (Moyes), Lynch, Gillies, Ferreira, Guy (Marshall).

Goal – Gillies (88)
