Open University and Football League Trust launch exciting new degree

The Football League Trust has teamed up with The Open University to launch an exciting new degree which will bring business learning to life.

BA (Hons) Business Management (Sport and Football) allows students to achieve their graduation goals by selecting business, management and sports modules to match their personal career ambitions, whilst applying business tactics to the beautiful game throughout their studies.

United’s managing director John Nixon, also chairman of the Football League Trust, explained: “Our partnership with The Open University is very exciting and one which we feel will bring great benefits to both organisations in the long-term.

“This marks the formal start of this partnership as we start to promote the new degree opportunity that has been developed.

“The BA (Hons) Business Management (Sport & Football) degree starts this coming October and has been designed to teach general business management principles through the lens of professional football.

“It has not been designed as a degree for people who want to get a job in football, but as a course that will help people of all backgrounds to advance their chosen careers. Some people may even end up getting jobs in football through the course and good luck to them; however that is not the primary motivation for launching this degree.

“There are great similarities between The Football League, The Football League Trust and The Open University. The Football League, as we can see around us, has a unique heritage and its clubs exist at the very heart of our communities across both England and Wales.

“The Football League Trust supports a national network of community organisations (all charities) attached to The Football League's 72 member clubs, utilising the power of football to engage with over 1.5 million people each year.

“The Open University too has tremendous engagement strength and a track-record in encouraging people from all backgrounds to study and learn. Together I think this makes a fantastic team and I am very excited to see what we can do with this partnership in the coming years.

“Much work has already gone in to preparing both the degree and the free short course. I'd like to thank Fabrice Muamba, our great friends at the PFA, and both Chesterfield FC and MK Dons who have all provided great support with regards filming and content for the courses. Thanks must also go to our colleagues at the National Football Museum who were such accommodating hosts for the launch event.

“A number of our Football League stadia will also be used for workshops over the course of the degree. This adds a further strength to the course in that we have already seen through the work of our community trusts how these venues can inspire people of all ages to want to study and learn.

“This is a significant step for The Football League Trust and, working in partnership with both The Football League and The Open University, we feel we can motivate many thousands of people, young and old, to want to study and advance their chosen careers.”
