LOAN: Striker makes a return

27 March 2014

Forward in until end of campaign

Carlisle United have today signed Sheffield Wednesday striker Gary Madine on a loan spell which brings him back to Brunton Park until the end of the current campaign.

Madine, 23, came through the youth ranks with the Cumbrians where his prolific goal scoring feats earned him a professional contract and a debut, at the age of just 17, when he came off the bench in a televised 1-0 victory over Nottingham Forest in March 2008.

He scored his first goal for United in August that year, in a 4-1 win over Yeovil Town, and went on to have loan spells at Rochdale, Coventry City and Chesterfield.

It was on his return from the Spireites that he started to cement a first-team place, grabbing four goals in nine appearances including United's consolation goal in the 4-1 defeat to Southampton at Wembley Stadium in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy final.

He joined the Owls on a four-and-a-half year deal in January 2011, for an undisclosed fee, and finished as club top scorer at Hillsborough with 18 goals for the 2011/12 promotion campaign.

Gary Madine will wear squad number 10.
