FUTSAL: Strength and conditioning at the Sands

21 May 2014

Sands Centre put Futsal lads through their paces

Carlisle United’s Futsal squad has enjoyed an impressive first season, with the A and B teams currently sitting on the top of the pile in their respective divisions, and no stone has been left unturned in the quest to make things even better as the lads have been put through their paces.

Carlisle Leisure, already sponsors of the Community Sports Trust, are just one of the local organisations who have stepped in to help the Futsal scheme become a success and we popped along to one of the regular Friday morning strength and conditioning sessions, at the Sands Centre here in Carlisle, to see what the lads get up to.

United’s Futsal manager James Tose said: “Carlisle Leisure have been absolutely brilliant with us. They have sponsored the CST throughout this season and, as well as that, these sessions with the Futsal lads on a Friday morning have been invaluable.

“We get to work with professional fitness and personal trainers, and it means we can test the lads in a different environment. It’s very hard work, but I know the lads enjoy it and come away feeling they’ve achieved something from every session they do.”

Carlisle Leisure’s Personal and Fitness trainer Kiran Kaddra said: “The idea of these sessions is to give the lads something different and something they aren’t used to doing on a day to day basis.

“We’ve found we get a lot out of them by doing it this way because they aren’t able to predict what we’re going to be doing from a week to week basis. They’d put less into it if they were able to do that so I suppose this is almost a shock to the system, in terms of putting them through a series of explosive and testing exercises.”

“A lot of the principals we use through these sessions come into play when they go into their games each week. It helps to improve things for them – a good example of that is the standing squat jump. That’s something they will use when they go to head a ball, and things like that.

“We make sure it’s always a challenge for them and we give them things to do which they possibly haven’t seen before. That way we can push them harder and get the most benefit from every session they do.

“The response has been really good from the lads. They started slowly, because it was new to them, but as their capabilities have built up they’ve really bought into it. I think they’ve come on leaps and bounds and their attitude has been fantastic. It’s been really good to see.”
