FRIENDLY: Dumbarton 0 - 2 United

29 July 2014

Result from the Dumbarton friendly

United's last away friendly of the summer took them north of the border to Dumbarton and a confident performance earned them a comfortable 2-0 victory.

5 mins - United controlled the early play and created the first chance of the night when Grainger swept a 40-yard pass to the right flank. A good first touch from Symington took him into the box but Agnew did well to block as Paynter raced in.

9 mins - Carlisle kept the pressure on and Paynter shielded a long ball forward with his back to goal. Potts took over and his pass released Brough, who beat his man and earned a corner from a first time cross. A half clearance from the delivery eventually fell to Dicker but he couldn't keep his powerful shot down.

12 mins - The visitors should have taken the lead when Amoo swung a deep free kick into the box. Potts connected with a firm header from close range but it thumped into Mair and bounced free in the six yard box. Brough was off-balance and his attempt bobbled wide with Grindlay rooted to the spot.

18 mins - Dumbarton settled and a slick passing move put Gilhaney on the edge of the area. He cut inside and let one go but Gillespie watched it all the way.

21 mins - United were quickly back on the front foot and Grindlay could only beat a stinging low drive from Symington back into the mix. Paynter reacted first but the keeper spread himself to prevent the delicate chip from finding the back of the net.

23 mins - Amoo pulled wide to make space and his movement gave Paynter a clear sight of goal. A bobble took the ball high and the 16-yard shot was scuffed wide of the upright.

24 mins - The home side broke quickly and McDougall rode two challenges before dropping a shoulder and going for glory. Campbell was in support and it needed an intervention from Grainger to divert the danger away.

25 mins - More good build up play sent Paynter clear but Grindlay dropped low to make the save as the big striker went for the bottom corner.

37 mins - It was all Carlisle but strong defending kept the visitors at bay. A through ball from Dicker brought another shot on the spin from Paynter but it whisked just wide with the keeper beaten.

42 mins - McDougall found himself clean through as Dumbarton threw men forward. He curled a dipping shot for the top corner and Gillespie jumped to get two hands to it and push it away.

47 mins - United were rewarded for their first half hard work when they took the lead from the first attack after the break. Kearns used the ball well and spotted Amoo pulling away from his man. The pass was perfect and the finish left Grindlay with no chance.

50 mins - Paynter held play up once more for Kearns to take over. Marrow called for it and his incisive slide rule pass put Symington on the byline. His fizzed cross whipped across the face of goal and Potts was an inch away from finishing it off.

63 mins - Carlisle enjoyed long spells of possession and Paynter thought he'd done everything right when he got on the end of fantastic cross from Brough. He kept his header down and was disappointed to see it bounce up off the surface and skip just over the bar.

64 mins - Dan Hanford was called into action when Kirkpatrick tried his luck from distance. It bounced awkwardly in the six yard box but he dropped low to gather.

67 mins - A deflected cross from Amoo looped high into the box. Paynter stood his ground and the keeper could only watch as the ball skipped free inside the box. Paynter and Potts had half chances blocked and the home side recovered to hook it clear.

80 mins - The chances kept coming for Carlisle but Dumbarton closed ranks to tighten the gaps at the back.

81 mins - Dempsey linked with Potts and Kearns to create an opening but he couldn't quite find the angle he needed as a volley smashed into the keeper's midriff.

90 mins - United rounded off an excellent display with a 22-pass move which gave Kyle Dempsey a chance to shoot. He had plenty of work to do but he kept his cool to slot it home from a very tight angle.
