A walk down World Cup memory lane
Carlisle United director and United Trust chairman Norman Steel received a timely reminder of one of the club’s close links with the World Cup when an autograph collector called Mila A. Aschenbrenner, who is based in the Czech Republic, sent through some images of former player-manager and sports journalist Ivor Broadis from his England days, including his appearances in the 1954 FIFA World Cup which was held in Switzerland.
Broadis, who played over 250 games for the Cumbrians, made 14 appearances for England and scored 8 goals over a three year period, which included two against Belgium to make him the first England player to score twice in a single game during the World Cup competition. Nat Lofthouse repeated the feat later in the same match, which ended as a thrilling 4-4 draw.
