FRIENDLY: United 1 - 0 Bolton

23 July 2013

Updates from the friendly game

United host their second home pre-season game of the summer tonight when Dougie Freedman brings Championship side Bolton Wanderers to Brunton Park [kick off 7:45pm].

"Things are starting to pick up now as we start to finalise our thinking ahead of the first game of the season," manager Greg Abbott said.

"This will be another good test for our players and we'll be looking to pick up from the way we played in the second half against Burnley.

"We'll give a lot of our players another good run out and we expect to see the match fitness and sharpness start to really come together."

And on trialist Jordan Deacey, he said: "Jordan has left us because we didn't think he was better than what we've already got. He's worked hard and played some good football, but we have to be sure that any new signing is going to add to the squad with the situation we're in. He's a good lad and we've enjoyed working with him, and I'm sure he will go on to do well."

1 min - James came under real pressure and was forced into a mistake on the edge of his own box. Eagles pounced but Livesey did well to slide in and block the Pratley shot.

2 mins - Bolton stayed forward and a Pratley cross sat nicely for Eaves. He didn't quite connect with his effort but Gillespie had to dive across to stop the awkwardly bouncing ball from creeping in.

5 mins - Chris Eagles blazed a 25-yard free kick high over the bar.

10 mins - Good football from Amoo and Potts opened a gap for a cross and Miller did well to lay the ball off perfectly for Thirlwell. He went for a first time 19-yard volley and he was unlucky to see it zip just over the bar.

13 mins - Fantastic work from Amoo took him past his marker and the cross caused all kinds of problems as Bolton struggled to clear. Lee Miller kept his eye on the ball in the driving rain and his shot squirmed under Lonergan despite a brave attempt at making the save.

15 mins - A Robson free kick deflected into the path of David Amoo but he had to stretch and could only poke his shot over the bar.

24 mins - Chris Eagles went close with a 28-yard free kick which shaved the woodwork and had Gillespie beaten

25 mins - Miller and Amoo combined again to open a gap and Berrett got the final touch as Bolton struggled to defend the situation.

26 mins - More confident attacking with backs to goal invited the Carlisle midfield to press forward. Robson was fed by Miller but his shot sliced off the top of his boot and screwed well wide.

31 mins - Hall took charge of a free kick from a tight angle on the right and Gillespie had to move his feet quickly to tip the wicked inswinger over the bar.

36 mins - Robbie Hall hustled his way through to a shooting position and his bending shot from 22 yards looked to be going in until it skipped off the surface and just wide of the upright.

38 mins - Eagles showed fantastic technique when he crunched a 35-yard free kick past the wall. Gillespie had to dive full length to make the save.

45 mins - Almost an own goal from ream as a dangerous free kick skimmed off his head, Lonergan back-peddled to tip it over the bar. Edwards was in space for the corner delivery but he miscued his connection and Bolton cleared.

Half time: United 1 - 0 Bolton

52 mins - Hall sent another dangerous free kick towards the bottom corner and Gillespie had to cover the yards on the slippy surface to get the ball behind.

55 mins - Matt Robson had space but his long range was always bending away from Loneergan's goal.

65 mins - A raking ball ran through to Gillespie and he had to punch it away as Lee ran from deep.

66 mins - The game became more about the weather - which was nothing short of atrocious.

70 mins - Lester broke through but Gillespie was off his line smartly to smother the chance.

74 mins - Lester let fly again but his volley was weak and was easily saved.

80 mins - Davies got a free kick through the wall but Gillespie gathered comfortably once again.

83 mins - Eagles beat Potts and crossed low but Livesey hooked it clear.

86 mins - Symington beat two and lobbed a lovely ball into the box. Beck got there with a header and the keeper was relieved to see it drop wide.

90 mins - Another Symington cross caused trouble but Beck was bundled out of the way as he tried to finish it off.
