Archibald-Henville opts to stay in Cumbria
United boss Keith Curle revealed this weekend that central defender Troy Archibald-Henville has turned down an offer from a Scottish Premier League outfit to move north of the border during the January transfer window.
“I’ve had a few phone calls about players going out on loan,” he confirmed. “What I do is tell them about the interest as soon as it comes in because I believe that’s the correct thing to do.
“We had one where a team from Scotland asked about taking over Troy’s contract, but he said he didn’t want to go. I won’t name the club, because I don’t want to upset people at their end, but his agent rang them back to tell them thanks, but no thanks. If he’d said anything other than that it would have meant he wasn’t happy here.”
“I don’t want the player to go, which I made clear when I got the call, but I do think it’s my duty to speak to him,” he continued. “He’s been playing in the team and he told me he was happy here and he didn’t want to go north or south, which was pleasing.
“I’m always open and honest about these things and I will always ask the player if he wants to go. If he says he does want to leave it means he isn’t happy here, and eventually that would lead to me being unhappy.
“We’d talk about that and I would move on and try to get a replacement for him, on the same money, because that will be someone who wants to play for the football club.
“I want people who want to be here. I don’t want them to just come and pick up a wage. I want them to want to be in the team and be successful. That’s the positive environment we’re trying to create.”
