INTERVIEW: A brilliant squad to be involved in

24 November 2016

Shaun Brisley on the Grimsby game

We spoke to defender Shaun Brisley shortly after full time at Blundell Park on Tuesday night to get his reaction to what was another very exciting evening of football.

“It was a good, entertaining game,” he said. “It was end-to-end stuff at times, but it was an enjoyable game to play in.

“We’re disappointed we couldn’t hold out for the win. There’s always frustration when we don’t win games. We set up to win, we’ve drawn, so there is frustration throughout the team tonight."

“The lads have got to be happy with coming here and getting a point but we are disappointed we didn’t get all three," he continued. "We’ll gather ourselves together and go again on Saturday.

“Good teams don’t lose more than one on the bounce - and I think we’ve shown we’re a good team following the Newport game.

“The way we’ve been playing all season, we demand so much of each other and when we don’t win games we're truly disappointed in ourselves. We’re the same tonight, we know this is a tough place to come but we felt we could go out there and get the three points."

Having started five of the last six games, with a niggling early season injury well and truly out of the way, he admitted that the competition for places is keeping everyone on their toes.

“We’ve got a lot of players who can step into my position, which is only good for the team," he said. "It keeps everyone on their toes because you know you have to train well and play well. We keep encouraging each other which is only a positive for the team. It’s a brilliant squad to be involved in.

"We've had another good performance and we're now looking forward to the game on Saturday already. It’s Mansfield at home and it’s another one we’ll be looking to win.

“If we can pick up another three points it will look like a good week. Two wins at home and a draw at a tough place is definitely something we can be pleased about."

On his own form, he told us: “I picked up a little injury in pre-season so my start at Carlisle has been frustrating for me. I’ve knuckled down and worked hard in training and it's then just a case of biding your time. I feel as though I’m doing enough to earn my place in the team.

“I’m feeling very fit now. I’m breezing through the games and I’m feeling good. It’s taken me a while to catch up with the lads but I’ve been working hard and I’m reaping the benefits."
