Defender Macaulay Gillesphey stays with United until end of season
Carlisle United can confirm that Newcastle United defender Macaulay Gillesphey has agreed a third half-season loan deal which keeps him at Brunton Park until the end of the current campaign.Gillesphey, 21, initially joined the Cumbrians on a short-term loan deal in September 2015 and this quickly turned into a season long stay following some extremely impressive performances.
He rejoined the Blues for pre-season in July and has so far added 22 appearances to the 27 he made for the club last season.
A versatile player, he has featured as a centre half and a left back, and secured a new deal at his parent club in June 2016 off the back of a very good spell in Cumbria.
Manager Keith Curle said: “We see ourselves as very much a part of Macaulay’s medium and long term development. He has some excellent attributes and he’s shown us recently that he has versatility and adaptability by playing in a role which is unfamiliar to him.
“He has an excellent range of passing and he’s learning more and more every day, which will only stand him in good stead. We like working with him, he likes working with us, and he knows he has more to give.
“He’s getting game time in a team which is competing for success at the right end of the table. I’ve said it before - he has the potential to be a very good player and we’re pleased to be able to play a part in bringing that out.”
“I have to say a big thank you to Newcastle United,” he added. “We’ve had some very good conversations with them and it’s good to know that they know we’re looking after one of their young players in the right way.
“The lines of communication between the clubs have been excellent and that has helped us to get this sorted very quickly. I think they know that Macaulay will gain more by being around a squad which is looking to improve and, ultimately, fight for promotion to the next level. It’s a win-win situation for all concerned.”
This deal remains subject to the completion and registration of all paperwork.
