Charlie Wyke on scoring his 17th goal of the season
We spoke to striker Charlie Wyke about his seventeenth goal of the campaign shortly after full time on Saturday following the 1-1 draw with Morecambe at Brunton Park.Speaking first about the game, he said: “We threw everything at them but they defended their box quite well. On another day we could have beaten them 3-1 or 4-1 so it’s a bit disappointing, but it’s another point and we go again.
“I know I’ve scored a goal today but I’m disappointed because I could have had two or three. The keeper made some really good saves and, like I said, on another day it could have been more."
“I thought all I needed to do for the chance in the first half was get it on target, because the keeper was on the floor," he explained. "He managed to get up quickly and he made an unbelievable save.
“It was nice to get another goal and it was another great cross from Nicky [Adams]. All I had to do was guide it into the corner because it was such a good ball. I’m just happy to score.
“I’m on 17 now so I’m getting close to that 20 mark. Every striker aims for 20 goals a season so it’s good that I’m getting on the end of crosses and putting them away. To get to 20 in the next few games would be nice.
“I had a meeting with the gaffer last year and he said he thought I could get 20-25 goals a season, so hopefully that’s what I can do this time round."
On the overall performance, he said: "I think we were a bit nervy at the start. We conceded an early goal but we got a good grip on the game after 20 minutes and we should have really gone on and won it.
“We played well and created a lot of chances. If we keep playing like that the goals and the points will come.
“People are saying we’ve had a blip but we’re still in the top three. We want to get a few more wins and hopefully we can stay in the top three for the rest of the season.
“We needed to make sure we didn’t get beat after the last two results so if we can get three points on Saturday today will be a good point."
“When they went down to ten men and we got the goal we did think we could go on and get the win," he said. "Unfortunately it didn’t come today, but if we keep working hard and doing good things on the training ground it’ll come.
“We’ve got to stay together and keep working hard, we’re a good enough team to bounce back and I think we’ll take the point after the last two results.
“We’ve had a few players out with injuries and illness and you could see that the squad was a little bit short in training the other day. I think we’ve just got to get through this period and hopefully the wins will come."
And speaking again about the rumours about transfer window interest, he said: “I’m happy here and I don’t really get distracted by rumours and things like that. I just want to keep scoring goals and keep getting points.
"Every time I look at Twitter I’ve supposedly been at a different club’s training ground but none of it is true. I just want to stay here and get promotion."
